#28 Free Parking

Accountants make a decent living and can afford to spend $3 at Starbucks every day of the year. However, when asked to pay for parking, you’d think their materiality threshold just split in half. Since accountants hate paying for parking, it stands to reason that they love free parking.
Free parking is a big deal. In addition to free parking, where an accountant parks is important. Under ideal circumstances, an accountant would park their new car in a corner spot where nobody would be able to hit them. Accountants are known to park far away from the building’s entrance in order to avoid the nightmare of other people parking next to them.
An accountant is among the first to arrive in the parking lot. Amazingly enough, they are also the last to leave. If you ever pass by an accounting firm’s office during the weekend, don’t be surprised to find many of the spots taken.
Free parking comes in many forms – by the coffee shop, the restaurant, or the office. When available, free parking is an amazing luxury. If you ever need to convince an accountant to drive you somewhere, telling them that there is free parking will allow you to seal the deal.
I park 5 blocks away for free even though there is a $5 lot right next to the building.
I park downtown by the homeless shelter in a vacant lot and walk by the soup kitchen…dodging panhandlers the whole way just not to pay parking. What’s worse than having to pay for parking? Cash only parking garages…
I too enjoy free parking but when I can run it through I usually park in our office building $32 a day, across the street is $18 a day, I consider the extra $14 a penalty for making me drive to the office.
In our office, we’ve discovered that the parking lot across the street, which is normally $10 a day (compared to $35 in our building), is free if you leave after 10pm because the attendant leaves, so for working the 4 extra hours of overtime we get the benefit of free parking.
Cash only anything sucks.
This post is really a stretch. Come on, there are way funnier things you could post about? Free Parking…have you really exhausted every other possible subject already?
I work for a major parking company and get free parking. For some reason, this perk is worth more to me than any other perk I have ever had in my life. You might be on to something…
God bless “Visitor Parking.”
This is the best blog I have ever read…….please keep it up.
$5 underground heated parking in our own building after 10 pm almost beats having to walk nearly two blocks to the $8 parking ramp only to get into a cold car to leave work at ~8 pm…
This is a 100% true fact. Living in Calgary with exorbidant parking rates ($32 a day) – I purposely work on Sundays to get free street parking.
What is this “free parking” of which you speak?
Parking is one of the first things I ask about when I’m getting shipped out to a new client! That being said, we definitely don’t take the furthest spots – we park in front of the door! No way I’m carrying my heavy stuff all the way to the end of the parking lot!

Used to get $1 parking for early birds. Arrive at the office at 7.30 rather than pay $8. Now that I’ve transferred offices I’ll have to deal with $20 bucks a day. ugh. Also, nothing is better than being able to park in visitor parking at a client.
